Open Mic for July, Redux

Hey, you should head over to the open mic page for July RIGHT NOW because I just added two new readings. One about a monster who might just be an angel of mercy, and another a trip down memory lane. You’ll have to go to the page to see them.

And WHILE YOU’RE THERE, feel to leave a comment, and consider making a donation to my crusade to fill up this summer with the voices of poets.

Open Mic for July

First call for the monthly Open Mic Invitation.

You know you want to lull me to sleep with your mesmerizing, velvety tones. So why not, I say. Why not? Grab an ice cold lemonade or iced tea (or an Arnold Palmer for those JUST CAN’T CHOOSE), wet your whistle, and hit record on your phone/computer/ultra modern recording studio.

We’re all waiting to hear you.

Here are the steps you need to take (reduced to three for a limited time):

  1. Record yourself reading one of your own works.
  2. Post it on your site (or Soundcloud or any other audio hosting site).
  3. Include a link to this post in your post;
    OR comment below;
    OR send me a message using the contact form.

I will post a link with your name and poem title RIGHT HERE and on the new Open Mic page (it’s above in the menu).

Remember, it’s an open mic invitation. NOT a challenge.

Also, if you can think of a way to improve the format, I’m all ears.

Open Mic–Last Call for June

Well, I said I’d do another reading, and I have. Here is is:

You can find the words to this poem here.

Also check those brave souls with amazing voices who submitted their own auditory offerings this month. And see the older Open Mic readings right here.

wings of ash (20160607)

everything moves in a circle
what i have breathed in
i will breathe out

my spine pushes its way out
through the back of my neck
hot skin, dry eyes
no pain, just pressure
like when the doctor says
you may feel a little discomfort

everything moves in a circle
what i have breathed out
i must breathe in

heavy, dark wings
emerge from my back
black snake fireworks
intumescent ash and billowing smoke
rings of fire carving new bones
where my shoulder blades once were

these wings beat
throw dust into the air
create tornadoes of choking, blinding sand
but they cannot lift me
and my arms hang now useless and free

everything moves in a circle
what i will breathe in
i have already breathed out

Open Mic Announcement (Post 20160501)

So, I didn’t get a lot of people participating last month for the Open Mic invitation. And then it hit me. It was National Poetry Month and I was asking a bunch of poets who were tirelessly devoting themselves to making words stick to the page just so. What was I thinking? I should have known you’d be far too busy.

So, this is going to be a monthly thing. Each month, I will announce the opportunity for you to participate in the Open Mic. It is not a challenge. There are no rewards except getting to hear me sound ridiculous as I read my own poems (and maybe feel pretty good about how you nailed it.

Participate or I’ll have to post this every week. Every. Week.

It’s an Elder Gods thing. I wish people wouldn’t stare.

let us go (Reading 20160428)

I’ve done it again. I am hear here to assault your ears with my reading of a poem I wrote earlier this week for NaPoWriMo. You know, using titles certainly makes it easier to refer to the poems, and to find them in my list of links.

I’d tell you to enjoy, but that might be asking too much.

Don’t forget, the Open Mic invitation is still, uh, open. SO… get busy. Record, post, drop a comment here, and I’ll add your link to the main sticky post. Let your voice live forever, just like mine will.

One of us. One of us.
