night song (poem 20160521)

latticework honeycombs
where bees make blood
instead of honey

all the same to vampires

(i’ve wanted to sink my teeth
into the soft skin of your neck
on more than one occasion)

marrow sitting deep
inside singing and humming
i can hear it while you sleep

calling my name
i curl around you
offering warmth in exchange

Poem 20160117

sacked out
at my feet
the dog looks tired
tongue hanging out
where he is missing teeth

on the walk
he seemed lively
and we took a route
we rarely take
so we could hear the frogs
in the creek
whenever the cars weren’t
whooshing past us
and we had
a moment of stillness

he snores
i smell the scent
of wood smoke from chimneys
see the blanket of low clouds
not quite fog
listening again
to the throaty calls
of frogs

Poem 20150924

across the street in the dark
on a well lit playing field
behind chain link
a child no older than three
chases a fluorescent yellow
soccer ball

his dad
i won’t call him father
chases close behind
herding him toward the net
where his mom
waits
wide open for him
to score a goal

he explodes in giggles
and collapses on the ball
that is half as big as he is
and i am so glad
that they are there

Poem 20150329

so impatient and greedy
for words
the reader clicks
and clicks and
clicks

and here they are
a few lines
meant for the hungry reader
lines etched in photons
that disappear
when the window closes
but leave their ghosts
trails on the backs of your eyelids
like fireflies
the night cannot hide

you could feel them
with your fingertips
if you could just
make
it
dark
enough

Poem 20150305

watching the moon slide up in the sky
like a giant ball of yellow wax
makes me think about all of those sunrises
we’ve missed laying in bed on the weekend
or sunsets because dinner needed to be cooked
or the pets needed to be fed
and i think
maybe it’s a fair exchange
to see the moon in this dark sky
because we’re here,
and the moon,
she isn’t going anywhere for awhile
