seed/fruit (20161110)
i hold a seed
the size of an almond
in my fist
a dried out husk
covered in thorns
when i squeeze
it pierces my flesh
the soft spot
below my thumb
i bleed
i squeeze harder
feeling the bite
the seed is thirsty
but i won’t be
enough
to satisfy it
though it would
certainly blossom
and bear terrible fruit
crimson drops decorate
the floor
the sizes and shapes
of cherry blossoms
i contemplate
tossing it into the fire
–being done with it
–being free of it
but i worry
i will miss
having something to feed
i will miss
the feedback of that sting
the taste of time (20161109)
cutting into a steak
overwhelms me
we are all
sacks of shambling meat
delicious char blackened umami
a result of rapid oxidation
it happens to us at a snail’s pace
every day
as the clock ticks down
so slow you can’t smell
the melting fat
or hear the sizzle
all of nature waits to sink its
teeth into us
and have that taste of time
running down its throat

purple is the sky (20161108)
wine-colored sky
[or maybe eggplant]
hard to to pin down
as it wheels about
cut to ribbons by old stars
by new moons
smeared with clouds
like a car window
fogged with a child’s breath
amazed at the power
of her own lungs
in the new cold
we strain to hear
crickets of the fall
as we stare into
a darkened eye
that covers us, a dome
like a bruise turned
inside out

late night vices (20161107)
if i had any vices left
i’d give them up for you
except for the ones
that creep into my dreams
after all i don’t invite them
but sleeping next to you
has an effect
on my brainwaves
i’ll be all innocent
in the dawn
if that’s what you want

New Reading on Open Mic
That’s right. Voeko has linked a great little short story all about taking that big step into the dark. Well, I’ll let you listen (and watch).
Here’s her site (which you should visit).

what we reap (20161106)
it all has to be cut down
the waist-high grasses we
thought were wheat
but turned out to be inedible
there was no chaff to separate
no flour to be ground
no bread to be baked
but the unleavened
hardtack of regret
and false hope

4. What We Reap
a charmed moment (20161105)

touch us gently, please
i wish for bread to fill an angel’s evening
this moment feels charmed
you shared your need like a quiet dance
devote a thousand words to
ask a promise I can never keep

the natural bridge (20161104)
all the dragons have been put
in pet stores and the magic
swords melted down into third place
trophies for dodgeball and the
rings that make you invisible
are plastic slap bracelets even
the dwarves have lifts in their
shoes and are as clean shaven as
they dare to be without losing
their street cred
whatever natural bridge
led from that other place to this
or held up under our feet long
enough to let that other place thrive
here has collapsed under
the weight of adult shoes

3. The Natural Bridge
the debt for happiness (20161103)
what do you want to do
marry every girl you know
that gets pregnant
messiah complex
if she’d been more educated
might have been her guess
though misguided
both she and i, really
her exasperation at
my naiveté
my disgust at her lack
of compassion
and carrying that
knowledge about us both
a red check in a black column
shaped like a ridiculous valentine heart
