she dances
on the sharpened edges
of razors
although
she doesn’t mean
to slice open
her feet
it’s just
there is the only place
she can find
to dance
and there is the only place
the music is loud enough
to hear
floating and leaving no trace
she dances
on the sharpened edges
of razors
although
she doesn’t mean
to slice open
her feet
it’s just
there is the only place
she can find
to dance
and there is the only place
the music is loud enough
to hear
every loss
is a taking away
negative
subtractive
a chunk of you or me
lost to time
or circumstance
or maybe malice
and you feel it, a vacuum
i suppose
in that emptiness
in your stomach
in the surprise asphyxia
of certain moments
in the way your eyes try
to see a missing item
–can you spy the difference
in these two images–
but if a loss is only
a cutting out
a phantom limb aching
below someone else’s knee
why does it weigh
so damned much
today
the world is smooth
the features
ground away
polished until it gleams
and i have no idea
why
the water is so heavy that i could skip
across the surface like a stone
i could bounce one-two-three
if i were lighter
but the water can’t bear my weight
any more than the earth could
so my lungs fill with thick
warm sweet salty water
i must be drowning
in amniotic fluid
so close to
rebirth
but the fire burning through
my marrow through my bones
makes cinders in my blood
the fire wants cleansing
to cast off the cycle
of birth and rebirth
burning and drowning
at the same time
i close my eyes
i think of you
i open my eyes
i think of you
every word i wrote
burned through the sheet
ashes to ashes
each scribble left a scorch mark
every letter was your name
every word was your heart
pages and pages of flames
under my fingers
and i didn’t even mind
the heat
we all fail downward
basho’s ancient frog
too tired to sing a love song
leaps into the grass
——
the farther away
someone is from you
increases how much
you miss them
you must be
on the other side
of the universe
if gravity
didn’t operate
on an inverse square
my atoms
would be torn apart
by the distance between us

Challenge 86 Flash&Dance
it was quiet and i was bored
maybe lonely
so i took out my phone and dialed
the oldest number in my contacts
–we’re sorry
the universe is busy tonight
or can’t come to the phone
please leave a message
and the universe will get back to you
as soon as possible
i hung up, annoyed
she always had something else
going on
and i think my messages always
wound up in a black hole
