a bone will creak
before it breaks
much like a dried branch
stepped on in summer
that makes the birds
go silent
but muscle
say
–a heart, for example–
will make no sound before
shattering like glass
or perhaps it is beyond
human hearing

floating and leaving no trace
a bone will creak
before it breaks

stepped on in summer

go silent
but muscle

will make no sound before
shattering like glass

Unlike a bone breaking a heart breaking may make no sound.
Indeed, a soul might break without warning… so true. Be watchful for the signs,
Nice write – I liked how you played with our expectations – who ever heard of a damp muscle “shattering” – other than (of course) the broken hearted?
Thank you!
Your Quadrille made me gasp, especially:
‘much like a dried branch
stepped on in summer
that makes the birds
go silent’
and
‘–a heart, for example–
will make no sound before
shattering like glass’.
I think was might hear our own.
Thank you so much.
Poignant! And so evocative!
Thank you 🙏

Wise words, Mr. Crow.
Thank you, Merril. 😀
I like the unexpectedness/contrast of the heart shattering like glass, when our minds are expecting soft tissue.
Thank you. I think it needed a left turn in there.
A broken heart feels just like glass puncturing flesh
And from the inside out where you can’t get at the shards.
Profound! A heart does break silently.
As much as I love this, I must also point out that while muscles might not ‘shatter’, you *can* hear them when you… ah… hit them with something like… a hammer.
Not what you’re going for, since the sound is rather dull, unlike the sound of shattering.
The first movie I saw in a really large theater with a modern sound system was Raiders of the Lost Ark. it was amazing to hear someone get punched. Later there was a tv special about the sound effects. Basically someone whacking a nice form cabbage with a baseball bat.
Wow! Your word imagery is wonderful!
Thank you!
So sad when the hearts just suddenly stops….Thanks for joining in Crow!
I agree
Beautiful, if tragic.
Thank you very much.
Oh, my heart summersaulted then tore a chamber as it read your achy breaky words! I expected your poem to stay with the birds, but you killed me with the last line, and I re-lived all those broken hearts in one swoop of your cruel wing. Yes, I loved the pain. Hurt me again. ❤️
I could never hurt you. More than you want.
Darn! Lol. Perhaps a hawk can help me.
😉
