layer by layer
i will open the old man up
and we’ll see
if he keeps that smile
plastered on his face
we’ll see
if the light finally goes out
in that ruined eye
we’ll see
if he kept his heart in his body
like a good boy
or
if he stashed it away
in the walls
or
under the floorboards

Ooh! Your cool poem reminded me of Poe’s story, “The Tell-Tale Heart.” I absolutely loved the gruesome humor.
That was the inspiration! You win!
Yay! The title and hiding the heart in the wall and floorboards took me back to Poe. Superb work!
Thanks, my dear!
My pleasure. The next time I read a Poe-inspired poem by you, I’ll mark it by walling something up in my home… maybe my grumpy neighbor. On second thought, maybe not, I’d have to listen to his bitching heart. 😆
Tell-tale Jack-o-lantern?
Oh, I didn’t even think of a pumpkin 🎃. But you’re right about the connection to Poe.
