i keep my heart
sealed tight in a jar
so you can’t hear its beating
i put a blanket
over the glass at night
since it makes noise
while i sleep
i whisper a soft lullaby
the words your name
repeated like a heartbeat
——
floating and leaving no trace
i keep my heart
sealed tight in a jar
so you can’t hear its beating
i put a blanket
over the glass at night
since it makes noise
while i sleep
i whisper a soft lullaby
the words your name
repeated like a heartbeat

I pictured a lab from one of those old black and white sci-fi movies (or Young Frankenstein) at first–but then those last three lines are so beautiful.
Thank you. ๐
particularly like the blanket over the cage imagining of your heart in a jar
Thanks!
We do need to protect them even if they keep us awake…
Have you not tried to link up using Mr Linky? There you will find the other entries.
I haven’t tried that. Is it on the Dverse site?
Ah. I found it. I’ll add my link.
๐ great to have you on board.
I like your use of the lowercase “i” here, a feeling of insignificance, of feeling like less. Trying to muffle even one’s own sound.
Thanks! I don’t usually capitalize anything in my poetry. Puts all the words on an even footing.
Great poem, the lullaby being the name repeated.
Thanks very much for reading and leaving a comment!
A lullaby sung to the rhythm of your own heart, or so it seems.
Lovely quadrille. Thanks for joining in at dVerse. ๐
Thanks for having me.
You are welcome anytime!
Very touching. Loved the imagery. I want to let your captured heart out of the jar . ๐
It might go on a rampage.
๐ could be fun!
Love crows btw.
Excellent!
I love every line in this poem.
Wow, thank you! Thanks for coming by.
I love the metaphor of the heart in a sealed jar, and whispering of the name like a heartbeat.
Nice meeting you and welcome to D’verse!
Thank you and thank you.
Maybe, it is better to let the heart be heard, why contain the musical beat..
I like the idea of singing a lullaby made up of a name in rhythm to a heartbeat. But I feel for that heart kept in a jar…
It’s built to endure ๐
I get it… ๐
I love this endearing fantasy.
Thank you!
Lovely and poignant. I liked this!
Thank you so much!
Love this heart in a jar
A life w/o the human entanglement
Simply beautiful

Ah if only it were as easy as storing an organ in a mason jar, eh?
