Here’s a holiday classic.
Silver and Gold, Burl Ives
I don’t know what’s up with the video, but it’s one of my favorite tunes and one everyone in the family enjoys, especially in the car.
Christmas Wrapping, The Waitresses
This is not a song that I own. Well, I own about four other versions of this song. But this version is from the movie Elf. I think that movie gets a bad rap, but the truth is, it was good for my family when it came out on DVD. My wife especially had really been hit hard by the flu and spent a lot of time in bed and ended up watching this film over and over.
“Buddy the elf. What’s your favorite color?”
Baby It’s Cold Outside, Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone
There are a lot of versions of this song. I have at least five on my computer, and just doing a quick search in YouTube returns a whole lot more, so many modern ones. But for me, you can’t beat Perry Como’s version. It has this almost unbearable melancholy to it, which this song should have. It was popular during the WW2 when so many American soldiers were separated from their families, many not knowing if they would ever return. But in the end, even the melancholy must yield to the glimmer of hope that one day soon, we all will be together.
I’ll Be Home for Christmas, Perry Como
Well, it’s time for the Chairman of the Board to sing.
Mistletoe and Holly, Frank Sinatra
You can’t have Xmas without Bing Crosby. If you tried, all the atoms in every Christmas tree on the planet would implode into tiny black holes, taking all those ornaments, gifts, and those fancy tree skirts your great-grandma hand-made while she was traveling to America from the Old Country in steerage.
Seriously, you have to play at least one Bing Crosby song or we’re all screwed.
Mele Kalikimaka, Bing Crosby
You know who loves Xmas? Bob Dylan. I wish I knew what this was. Zydeco? Klezmer? Wikipedia says polka, but damn!
Must Be Santa, Bob Dylan
Everyone loves Nat King Cole.
Every. One.
Buon Natale, Nat King Cole
I’m late getting this one out. Expect a second later today as I get this train back on track.
The Man with the Bag, Kay Starr
Her voice just kills me. She also does a version of the Headless Horseman. I didn’t know that anyone besides Bing Crosby did that song, but her cover of that is also perfect for Halloween.
Did I say no one had a better voice that Louis Armstrong?
How about Ella Fitzgerald?

Seriously, though, have your ever read the original lyrics intended for Judy Garland? The song writers had to make it less depressing. Frank Sinatra even had the writer change the lyrics. But when Ella sings about muddling through, you want to get through it together, with her.
