my apologies for
how much that love

–opportunities you have missed
–other loves
–all that time
and i’m sorry also
for the love that
you may have wasted
on me
i never meant
to let it slip between
my fingers
i was too afraid
to close my hands

while smoke pillared into the sky
and orange tongues licked
at the clouds and down
into the sluggish thames
